3G Revenue Strategies
(Wireless Europe Magazine, May 2001)
Alatto,
The Dublin, Ireland based provider of 3G consultancy services is
involved in the Manx 3G project and sees it as a unique learning
experience. "This work has helped us indentify the boundaries of
what the technology can and cannot do. Its all very well carrying
out thought experiments with concept devices, but it has been refreshing
to develop real applications using a 3G handset that is available
now." says Alatto's Dr. John Whelan.
According
to Whelan the project is all about generating revenue, and Alatto
is developing applications with this in mind. These include betting
applications and an inshore navigation system for small craft, that
will exploit the rich interface and bandwidth provided by Manx Telecom.
An Alatto analyst adds that the trial will help to answer the $100
billion question - how will companies get returns on the total predicted
investment in next generation mobile technology across Europe. When
the Isle of Man network and services roll out European telcos will
get their first real glimpse of what this answer might be.
